Magical Roe (マジカル・ロウ, Majikaru Rou) was the 7th strongest Knight (8th strongest Knight after Rapunzel's death) of the Chess Pieces.

Appearance

As a jester, Magical Roe wore a dual-colored coat with matching ankle boots, baggy trousers, and a fool's cap over his head. He had amaranth spots over his eyes with rosy pink spots underneath. His coat, being black and white, symbolized his opposing roles as both a Knight of the Chess Pieces and the caretaker of Princess Snow.

Personality

Initially, Magical Roe is depicted in Snow’s memories as a very fun and kind person who entertained her with his magic tricks and played with her for many years. The two became quite close and Ed in the anime mentions that Snow was hesitant to leave him in Lestava Castle and spoke frequently of him after running way.

It is later revealed that Magical Roe was very loyal to Diana and was prepared to follow all her orders, even if they went against his wishes. The anime showed he held his position in the Chess Pieces as a Knight in high regard and revealed a ruthless side of him in combat. Although he did genuinely care deeply for Snow, he was also prepared to do battle with and capture her under Diana’s orders.

It’s shown that Magical Roe is something of a blind follower to Diana and might not know how to proceed without her, but towards the end of both the manga and the anime, he expressed some doubt towards her true intentions and eventually decided that she needed to be stopped.

History

Magical Roe becomes best friends with Princess Snow.

One late afternoon, when a young Princess Snow was crying in her room amongst her toys, she heard a voice that asked her to dry her tears and offered a handkerchief. She took it to wipe her face but stood up when she realized that no one was in front of her to have offered it. Suddenly a puff of pink smoke popped out in front of her and Magical Roe appeared, introducing himself to be Snow's jester, caretaker, and friend. He showcased his many skills including juggling and puppetry. He then kneeled down and offered Snow a yellow rose to celebrate their meeting. The two would become close, and Magical Roe taught Snow many things, telling stories of his travels, reading books together, and how to do some of his tricks.

War Games

After the fifth round, the Knights are called into Phantom's room for a meeting. Phantom then specified that the only Knight who needed to be punished was Rapunzel, for her senseless murder spree of Chess teammates during the fourth round. Phantom offered her a chance to save herself by dueling against a Rook named Ian.

Magical Roe and his fellow Knights go outside to the surface below where the castle floated to observe the duel between Rapunzel and Ian. Ian effortlessly brushes off Rapunzel's attacks and immediately kills her with one attack. Phantom promotes Ian to the Knight class, taking Rapunzel's position, and hands him the Knight pierce. Ian turns to the other Knights and announces his intentions as a new Knight to kill whichever one of them hurt his beloved.

Round 6

As the knight enters the battlefield, he removes his cloak and reveal himself, shocking both Snow and Alan. Snow ask why Magical Roe joined the Chess, Magical Roe replies that he never joined the Chess but was always a part of them from the start. Alan notices that because of Snow's connection to Magical Roe that it's gonna be a very difficult fight.

Magical Roe VS Snow

When the match finally gets underway Magical Roe jumps on a ball and announces it as the Weapon ÄRM, Blade Ball, as blades emerge from the sides of the ball as it begins to spin. Magical Roe rolls on the ball and brings the fight to Snow who manages to evade the blades and stay just far enough away that Snow isn't harmed. Magical Roe recalls his Blade Ball and compliments Snows fighting skills and activates his Nature ÄRM, Flare Wheel. Several Rings of fire appear and rush towards Snow but Snow jumps through each flaming ring without any fear or hesitation and activates Icicle to freeze the very flames themselves. Magical Roe once again pulls out a large bubble wand, Nature ÄRM, Bubble Lion, and from the wand emerges a large lion. Snow defends with Iced Earth which launches chunks of ice destroying the bubble beast.

Magical Roe is surprised that all of his attacks at this point have been defeated in one hit. Snow however is breathing heavily. Ginta and Babbo both recognize that Snow is in trouble and Alan agrees telling them that Snows magic is in disarray because Snow doesn't want to fight Magical Roe. Snow in tears tells Magical Roe that she doesn't want to fight. Magical Roe agrees saying he doesn't wish to fight Snow either but it's Diana's orders so Magical Roe must fight.

Magical Roe activates the Guardian ÄRM, Trump Soldier, which summons four metals card soldiers each armed with a different weapon, Magical Roe orders for the to attack. The first Trump Soldier armed with a bow, launches an arrow and strikes Snow in the arm. While two more Trump Soldiers charge in for a close attack. Snow summons several of her Yuki-chan who crush Magical Roe's Guardians.

After Magical Roe's guardians are crushed Magical Roe activates a Unique ÄRM, Mimic Medallion, which copies an opponent's ÄRM. The medallion copies Snow's guardians and traps snow between her own beloved guardians. Magical Roe activates his next Guardian ÄRM, Nightmare. Several balls appear with eyes and razor sharp teeth and launch themselves at Snow, successfully dealing hits. Dorothy not understanding why Snow isn't fully willing to fight Magical Roe ask Alan why that is. Alan explains that Magical Roe was Snow's babysitter and that they were very close. Snow summons her Guardian ÄRM, Undine, to manifest a pillar of water from under Nightmare, tearing the guardian to shreds.

After Snow's attack Magical Roe encapsulates her in a bubble and admits that Diana wanted Magical Roe to capture Snow, not defeat her. Magical Roe and Snow then vanish as Snow cries for Ginta to help her. Pozun declares Magical Roe the winner, but Ginta calls bullshit and tells Team MÄR they are gonna rescue Snow from Lestava Castle but before that can happen Ian attacks Ginta and Pozun tells Ginta and the rest of Team MÄR that if they leave before the final match MÄR will forfeit the match and since Ginta is captain the War Games will be over, forcing the next round to begin.

After the War Games

In the manga, while Team MÄR stormed Lestava Castle, Magical Roe fought off Nanashi, Alan, and Gaira to prevent them from reaching Snow. He is soundly defeated by the trio and then questioned by Alan. Magical Roe admitted that he really had fun with Snow and her smile made him happy, however, he acted under Diana's orders and her plan involved using Snow, therefore he couldn't do anything about it. Magical Roe then begged them to save Snow.

Magical Roe fades away due to unlocking the Death Cube.

In the anime, he instead fought Alan and Ginta Toramizu and, after defeat, Magical Roe realized Diana’s true nature and sacrificed his life in order to save Snow from the Queen's Darkness ÄRM, Death Cube, atoning for his wrongdoings towards the princess. He was able to see his princess smile before his death. Unlike other Darkness ÄRM's, the penalty does not fall on the user. Instead, whoever unlocks the cube to free the trapped contents will take its place to be dematerialized. When Snow realized Magical Roe saved her and did not see him, Babbo theorized Magical Roe was shameful to see her after kidnapping her. However, only Alan saw Magical Roe's demise and kept quiet about it.

ÄRMs

Magical Roe uses a variety of circus-themed ÄRM:

• Blade Ball: A Weapon ÄRM that creates a ball with sharp blades extending from it.
• Flare Wheel: A Nature ÄRM that create flame hoops to attack the target. Destroyed during his battle with Snow.
• Bubble Lion: A Nature ÄRM that resembles a bubble hoop creating lion-shaped bubbles to attack.
• Mimic Medallion: An unique ÄRM that mimics the ability of an opponent's ÄRM (i.e summons the same Guardian his opponent's ÄRM calls, but their power differ in accordance to the user's power).
• Trump Soldier: A Guardian ÄRM that creates card soldiers. Outlines of these soldiers can be seen in the background of the cover spread of the first chapter.
• Nightmare: A Guardian ÄRM that creates many eyed, sharp-toothed spherical objects, which fly around and attack.
